The Investissements d’avenir represent nearly 50 billion euros allocated by the State to finance innovation in France, enhance productivity, innovation capacity and increase competitiveness. Geothermal energy has been the subject of a specific call for projects of the Future Investments programme. The innovative nature, the scientific quality, socioeconomic impact, the impact on the training system, international visibility, development strategy and dissemination of knowledge are all criteria that led to the selection of the GEOTREF the project.

Today, GEOTREF remains one of the few projects in the French Overseas Departments supported by the Future Investments. ADEME was selected to disburse and monitor the Future Investments financial aid programme for the GEOTREF project.

The GEOTREF project incorporates a demonstrator to validate the modeling methodologies and tools developed.
The Vieux Habitants site was chosen to host this demonstrator: in fact several studies previously conducted suggest the existence of a geothermal resource, without ever having been characterized in a reliable manner.
The Guadeloupe region is pleased to welcome this demonstrator and thus participate in a project of scale. This will make it possible to focus significant scientific expertise in geothermal energy in the territory. Moreover, the project is expected to definitively characterize the geothermal potential of the Vieux Habitants area, suggesting the possibility of additional electricity generation from geothermal energy.
It will:
- Focus significant scientific expertise in geothermal energy in the territory,
- Definitively characterize the geothermal potential of the Vieux Habitants area, and should the geothermal resource be found to be exploitable, enable the generation of electricity.
As such, the Guadeloupe Region has chosen to support the GEOTREF project.
